A Modernist Gem In Pasadena, $2.6M

by Philip Ferrato

If you’re looking for a 3-bed, 2.5-bath house with flexible multi-level spaces, beautiful details set in a sophisticated design language that reaches back to the glory days of Modernism in Los Angeles, look no further than this exceptional property from Corsini Stark Architects. Known as the Callow Residence and completed in 2016, it received a coveted AIA Merit Award two years later. (Photo at top: Steve King for Compass; all others as noted.)

With a design firmly rooted in the local Modernist tradition, the architects’ website says it best, “The clients expressed a desire for a house with a modest scale from the street, a fluid relationship between interior and exterior space, with privacy from adjacent neighbors, and a distinctive design conceptually situated on the trajectory of Los Angeles modernism. We organized the site into functional bands of varying widths running north-south, and overlaid a pattern of alternating angled walls and roof lines to shape space and direct view and movement from the site and through the house.”

From the walled entry patio there’s a long sweep of entertaining and gathering spaces under the angled roof, lit with clerestory windows, and overlooking a double-height library/media room.
