Anu Jain, the founder and principal designer at Atelier Oleana, has put her family home in St. Francis Wood on the market. With its development beginning in 1912, St. Francis Wood is one of San Francisco’s first planned residential communities, laid out by the Olmstead Brothers and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. Along with mature trees and winding streets plus a cohesive architecture of mostly Spanish Revival, Norman and Tudor, it’s long been a desirable place to live. Despite the neighborhood’s elegant domestic architecture, the lots are quite compact. Jain solved the problem of outdoor space by designing a checkerboard garden with multiple seating areas, an outdoor kitchen and improving the indoor-outdoor flow.
